Afe Babalola: Nigeria Police Withdraw Defamation Suit Against Dele Farotimi

The Nigeria Police Force has filed a notice of discontinuance in the defamation case brought against Dele Farotimi, Lagos-based Nigerian lawyer and author by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

The notice—dated January 29th—was filed in line with Section 108 (1) (2)(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and aims to withdraw the charges against Farotimi at the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti.

The document, signed by police prosecutor Samson Osubu, states that the decision to drop the case follows the request of nominal complainant, Are Afe Babalola, after interventions from concerned citizens.

As of the time of this report, all parties were present in court, and the prosecution had formally served the notice to the defendant’s legal team. However, the presiding judge is yet to officially dismiss the charges.
