The Rivers State governor, Sim Fubara, has highlighted that there is no clause in the 1999 Nigerian Constitution that allows elected local government chairmen to serve longer terms.
This announcement follows the governor’s directive for the elected council chairmen, whose three-year term ended on Monday, to hand over to the heads of administration in the 23 local government districts.
This command was given by Fubara on Tuesday in Port Harcourt during a state broadcast.
Speaking to reporters in Port Harcourt, Fubara said the decision intends to maintain peace and order in the state and is in line with the provisions of the constitution.
“We will fearlessly lead the way to ensure that peace continues to prevail in the state while protecting all patriotic supporters for their stand on the path of truth.
“The law on local government tenure is unambiguous. The court clearly affirmed the position of the law.
“The law is the law; there is no extension of the local government’s tenure in it. The court says so.”
