Unrest as enraged Abuja citizens set fire to robber’s corpse following policeman’s death

The body of a suspected armed robber was set on fire by several citizens of Abaji district council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Thursday.

Around 5:30 p.m., the criminals broke into a bank in the town.

The robbers initially targeted the police station on Toto Road, where an inspector only known as Abila was shot and killed, a police officer informed Daily Trust.

He claimed that after getting out of two unmarked cars, the thieves opened fire on the police station.

“In actuality, God spared me because the criminals opened fire on the police station as soon as they got out of the car. An inspector who had previously escaped turned back after they shot him in the chest, but I was able to get away,” he claimed.

It was discovered that a few gang members had gone to the FirstBank branch near the roundabout and had begun intermittently shooting.

A bank employee, who talked with our reporter under the condition of anonymity, claimed that although the robbers were unable to gain entry to the strong room containing the majority of the money, they were still able to take some cash off the counter.

He claimed that before entering the bank, the bandits shot a guard who had fled into the security house’s lavatory.

According to information obtained by Daily Trust, a group of law enforcement, military personnel, vigilantes, and hunters swiftly arrived at the location and engaged the robbers in a vigorous gunfight, resulting in the deaths of two of them.

One of the corpses was grabbed by a vengeful mob and set on fire.

As for the robbers, it was confirmed by the FCT police commissioner, CP Benneth Igweh, who subsequently arrived on the site accompanied by police officials, that two of them were shot dead following a gunfight with security personnel.

Though he acknowledged the efforts of the united security team in thwarting the attack, he stated that hunters and the police anti-robbery squad had been sent into the jungle to track down the robbers who were running.

On the other hand, CP Igweh offered the inspector’s family his condolences.
