The National Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Kano Electricity Distribution Company are prohibited from enacting the new electricity pricing for Band A customers by an order obtained by a Federal High Court in Kano.
Suit filed by Super Sack Company Limited and BBY Sacks Limited is numbered FHC/KN/CS/144/2024.
The Manufacturers Association Of Nigeria Limited, Tofa Textile Limited, Mama Sannu Industries Limited, and Dala Foods Nigeria Limited are the others.
However, presiding judge Abdullahi Liman ordered NERC and KEDCO to halt the imminent tariff until the hearing and resolution of the move on notice brought before it, in response to an ex-parte motion made by plaintiffs’ attorney Abubakar Mahmoud.
Additionally, the ruling prohibited the defendant from threatening or intimidating the applicants by cutting off their electrical supply.
A pricing increase for electricity for customers classified as Band A was approved by NERC in April.
Customers in this group, who receive 20 hours of power per day, will pay N225 per kilowatt under the new price, effective April 3. The previous rate was N66.
The House of Representatives and other interested parties have since criticised the abrupt increase and requested that NERC halt the introduction of the higher pricing.
