Just In : UNIBEN Suspends SUG over attack on Lp guber

The senior staff club at the institution extended an invitation to the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate for an interactive session.

According to reports, some students were directed by the head of the students’ union to break into the event location.

It was discovered that the students had purportedly urged that the event be stopped, arguing that the students’ union had not received enough information about it.

Several staff members were allegedly roughed up by the students as a result of their disruptive behaviour during the event. One member of the Academic Staff of the Universities, ASUU, was reportedly beaten to a pulp and then taken to the hospital.

The university’s administration formed a team to look into the situation after it happened in an effort to determine the main cause of the problem.

Following the probe, A.A. Bobola, the university’s registrar, declared in a statement on Monday, April 29, 2024, that the students’ union would be suspended indefinitely.

The statement reads:

“After due consideration of the report by the Management, the Vice Chancellor has approved the suspension of the University’s Students Union.

“The suspension which is indefinite, takes immediate effect, that is, from today, Monday 29th April, 2024.

“Accordingly, all officers of the Students’ Union are to handover all properties of the Union in their possession to the Dean, Students’ Affairs not later 4.00 pm on Tuesday 30 April, 2024.

“In the interim, a caretaker committee composed of representatives of faculties, schools and institutes has been approved to coordinate students’ activities during the period of suspension.

“The above directive of the Vice Chancellor is hereby communicated for the attention of the University community and compliance of the erstwhile union officers as appropriate.”
