The Senate committee that is looking into the N30 trillion Ways and Means loans that the Federal Government obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria, which is headed by Godwin Emefiele, has announced that it will ask to have the investigation’s time limit extended.
Sen. Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, assigned the panel a six-week deadline to look into the loans at the panel’s initiation on March 11, 2024.
In addition, the panel was tasked with investigating the CBN’s nearly N1 trillion Anchor Borrowers’ Programme during the previous administration and advising it to look into every aspect.
APC senator from Kogi East, Isah Jibrin, chaired the panel that subsequently announced it had discovered roughly 13 financial violations purportedly made during the loan application procedure.
The Senate also revealed that it would call a meeting with Olayemi Cardoso, the governor of the CBN, and a few directors of the top bank, especially those who collaborated with Emefiele.
The committee stated that it has received certain documents that could aid in the probe and that it will be contacting a number of government representatives involved in the loan.
But the Senate adjourned plenary and went on break after two or three meetings.
According to available information, the six-week deadline passed on April 26, 2024.
The panel’s head, Jibrin, responded to our correspondent by saying that the panel would request an extension of time when the Senate reconvenes after missing the deadline.
“We will seek an extension when we resume,” he stated. “The Senate has been in recess for approximately a month.” We’ll make sure the work is completed completely.
According to reports, the National Assembly will reconvene on Tuesday, April 30, following its original April 23 date.
