Just in: Court nullifies Kano government’s move to repeal emirates council law

In a significant ruling, a Federal High Court in Kano has struck down the Kano state government’s attempt to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law.

The law had been repealed by the Kano House of Assembly, leading to the dethroning of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano and the reversal of the creation of four emirates by the previous administration.

The court’s decision comes after a kingmaker, Aminu Babba Danagundi (Sarkin Dawaki Babba), challenged the legality of the law and sought a declaration of its nullity.

Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman ruled in favor of the plaintiff, setting aside the government’s actions and ordering all parties to maintain the status quo.

This development means that the re-appointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano, which was based on the repealed law, may be reconsidered.

The court’s ruling has thrown the emirate’s leadership into uncertainty, and details of the next steps are still emerging.

More details shortly..
