The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) established the Schools Protection Squad (SPS) in Kano state on Thursday, May 2.
According to authorities, the squad’s job is to keep students, teachers, and learning facilities safe from armed bandits and kidnappers.
Mohammed Gumel, the Commissioner of Police, officially opened the 60-person squad at the police command headquarters in Kano.
According to Gumel, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Ebegtokun, launched the SPS as a means of sufficiently ensuring a secure learning environment, safeguarding instructors and students as well as the vital infrastructures and amenities of the schools.
The SPS was made up of sixty suitably qualified police officers who were equipped with the right equipment and kits for the job.
In all places throughout each senatorial district of the state, he declared, “they will be dispatched to intensify robust patrols around all primary and secondary schools, including all vulnerable tertiary institutions starting today, Thursday, May 2, 2024.”
The police commissioner gave an explanation of how the 60-officer squad was prepared for potential terrorist invasions and assaults by providing them with operational cars and advanced monitoring devices. The squad was trained in school policing and protection techniques in Abuja.
Gumel claims that the 60 personnel are insufficient to guard schools in the 44 local government areas and the Kano metropolitan area; however, as instructed by the police inspector general, these squads will be duplicated to obtain an adequate number of troops for school safety.
